Indoor Activities & Entertainment Around DC
Summer in DC can be steamy—but living at Avec on H puts a whole world of indoor activities and air-conditioned fun within an easy ride. From immersive museums to indoor games and films, here are great ways to stay cool without sacrificing your weekend plans.
Quick-cool Indoor Activities
Planet Word (Downtown)
This interactive museum of language is a perfect summer cool-down. General admission is free (donation suggested), and hours are Monday & Wednesday–Friday 10 a.m.–5 p.m., Saturday–Sunday 10 a.m.–6 p.m. Reserve a timed pass, and if you love puzzles, add Lexicon Lane, a 60-minute word-sleuthing experience that you can book for your group.
Kogod Courtyard at SAAM/National Portrait Gallery (Penn Quarter)
Need a calm, light-filled place to relax? The glass-canopied Kogod Courtyard offers free Wi-Fi, seating, and late hours (open daily 11:30 a.m.–7 p.m.). It’s an easy indoor oasis between gallery visits—and an ideal meetup spot downtown.
U.S. Botanic Garden Conservatory (Capitol)
Wander tropical and desert biomes—no sunscreen required. Through Aug. 31, 2025, the Conservatory operates 11 a.m.–6 p.m. while crews replace greenhouse glass; on the third Thursday of each month (June–Sept.), the Summer Evening Series keeps doors open until 8 p.m. with live music in the Garden Court.
International Spy Museum (L’Enfant Plaza)
Take on undercover missions in DC’s most interactive museum—then step into Bond in Motion, the special exhibition of on-screen 007 vehicles open through Sept. 1, 2025 (combo and discounted ticket options available). Timed entry is recommended.
Play indoors (and close to home)
Alamo Drafthouse — Bryant Street (Rhode Island Ave–Brentwood)
Just up the Red Line from Union Station, Alamo pairs cold A/C with recliners, in-seat dining, and premium projection/sound—including The Big Show, a large-format auditorium with Dolby Atmos and a 66′ x 28′ screen.
Puttery (Penn Quarter) & Swingers (Dupont Circle)
Craving mini-golf without the humidity? Puttery brings moody, themed indoor courses, while Swingers delivers multi-course “crazy golf” with full bar and street-food partners in Dupont—both easy Metro hops.
Kraken Kourts & Skates (Edgewood)
Stay cool while you move: this massive indoor complex near the Metropolitan Branch Trail offers pickleball courts, an indoor roller-skating rink, axe throwing, and other indoor activities. Book ahead for peak times.
H-Street-friendly transit tip
Skip the car and the heat shimmer: the DC Streetcar runs free along H Street/Benning Road to Union Station, where you can connect to Metrorail for downtown museums and entertainment. Standard hours are Mon–Thu 6 a.m.–midnight; Fri 6 a.m.–2 a.m.; Sat 8 a.m.–2 a.m.; Sun 8 a.m.–10 p.m. (check service alerts before you go). Additionally, you have access to several major bus lines just outside of Avec. The D2X and D20 busses give you easy access to downtown and the Red Line Metro.
